Structural-Disorder-Induced Second-Order Topological Insulators in Three Dimensions

چکیده

Higher-order topological insulators are established as crystalline protected by symmetries. One celebrated example is the second-order insulator in three dimensions that hosts chiral hinge modes Since amorphous solids ubiquitous, it important to ask whether such a can exist an system without any spatial order. Here, we predict existence of insulating phase symmetry. Such manifests winding number quadrupole moment, quantized longitudinal conductance, and states. Furthermore, stark contrast viewpoint structural disorder should be detrimental higher-order phase, remarkably find induce from topologically trivial regular geometry. We finally demonstrate systems with time-reversal

Topological insulators in three dimensions.

We study three-dimensional generalizations of the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect. Unlike two dimensions, where a single Z2 topological invariant governs the effect, in three dimensions there are 4 invariants distinguishing 16 phases with two general classes: weak (WTI) and strong (STI) topological insulators. The WTI are like layered 2D QSH states, but are destroyed by disorder. The STI are rob...

Disorder-induced Floquet topological insulators.

We investigate the possibility of realizing a disorder-induced topological Floquet spectrum in two-dimensional periodically driven systems. Such a state would be a dynamical realization of the topological Anderson insulator. We establish that a disorder-induced trivial-to-topological transition indeed occurs, and characterize it by computing the disorder averaged Bott index, suitably defined fo...

Classification of interacting electronic topological insulators in three dimensions.

A fundamental open problem in condensed-matter physics is how the dichotomy between conventional and topological band insulators is modified in the presence of strong electron interactions. We show that there are six interacting electronic topological insulators that have no noninteracting counterpart. Combined with the previously known band insulators, these produce a total of eight topologica...

Reflection-Symmetric Second-Order Topological Insulators and Superconductors.

Second-order topological insulators are crystalline insulators with a gapped bulk and gapped crystalline boundaries, but with topologically protected gapless states at the intersection of two boundaries. Without further spatial symmetries, five of the ten Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes allow for the existence of such second-order topological insulators in two and three dimensions. We show t...
